if you’re an artist or songwriter, read this one through to the end…

For the new show I’ve been hosting in Los Angeles @ The Hotel Cafe every Tuesday night (Lucas Flood Presents) I’ve spent the past month listening to over 2,000 music submissions. It’s safe to say I’m no where near done with this, and they keep on comin.

While listening through these submissions, I think I almost puked at one point. I wish everyone working in the music industry could complete this task…going through the music and social media of hundreds and hundreds of young “artists,” located in every major music city across the country…it’s been eye (and ear) opening.

For the record, these submissions are both new, and old…artists who want to play the new show, as well as those I’ve kept on my personal lists over the years.

I decided to rebuild a database from the ground up, in efforts of curating the highest level of up & coming talent possible…this was also my main motivation in leaving Writer’s Block Songwriters, and heading out on my own.

My biggest takeaways so far:

— everyone is naked on the internet

— fitting in is more important than unique identity. if someone has 150,000 followers I MUST DO THE SAME THING AS THEM TO GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF FOLLOWERS AS THEM. the trends are cringy, all content starts to blend together as if it’s the same person making it.

— a good handful (more than you’d think) of those with high follower counts have 0 clips of them singing across their most recent 397 posts, but “musician” / “artist” is still in their IG bios???? I have no idea why this is.
